При дистанционных конных пробегах лошади перед соревнованиями проходят тщательный ветеринарный контроль: проверяются частота сердечного пульса, перистальтика, состояние слизистых десен и глаз, также проводится проверка на отсутствие хромоты лошади при движении рысью. В случае хромоты и при наличии отклонений в здоровье лошади, она не выпускается на старт и дисквалифицируется. Во время соревнований лошадь также регулярно наблюдается ветеринарной комиссией. Как правило, дистанции свыше 30 км разбивают на несколько этапов, с тем, чтобы лошадь могла получить кратковременный отдых и пройти ветеринарный контроль. Если лошадь не проходит ветеринарный контроль в положенное время с нормальными физическими параметрами, то она дисквалифицируется. Исследование проводили в условиях Ленинградской области на соревнованиях по дистанционным конным пробегам. Всего было исследовано 93 лошади, участвовавших в пробегах на 30, 40 и 80 км. Соревнования проходили по трассе, проложенной по лесным и полевым грунтовым дорогам через холмы с перепадом высоты до 20 метров. На каждом этапе лошади проходили предварительный, промежуточные и окончательный ветеринарные контроли. На дистанциях 30 и 40 км было 3 ветеринарных контроля, на дистанции 80 км - 5 ветеринарных контролей. После участия в соревнованиях по дистанционным конным пробегам при окончательном ветеринарном контроле хромоту наблюдали у 17,2 % лошадей, принимавших участие в пробеге. У 11,8% животных причиной хромоты являлись мышечные боли и отмечалась напряженность мышц в области бедра и крупа, у 5,4 % животных причиной хромоты служили повреждения поверхностного пальцевого сгибателя.
